BRIAN EPSTEIN APPOINTS DEREK TAYLOR TO GHOSTWRITE "A CELLARFUL OF NOISE"

In March 1964, The Beatles' mastermind, Brian Epstein, summoned Derek Taylor to the NEMS headquarters in Liverpool. At the time, Taylor was a Manchester-based reporter for the Daily Express, though his roots were in Merseyside. His fascination with the Fab Four had been sparked a year earlier after witnessing one of their live performances, and he had since earned a reputation as a journalist the band could trust.

Brian Epstein was looking to produce his memoirs—eventually titled A Cellarful of Noise—but he had no intention of writing them himself. He initially approached Taylor simply to ask for recommendations for a suitable ghostwriter.

During their meeting, after discussing the group’s future projects, Brian turned the conversation toward his own life story. Taylor was internally struck by the irony: "An autobiography? He's not even thirty yet!" He suggested Raymond Foxall, a writer known for historical romances, but Brian dismissed the idea immediately. He insisted on someone "modern," someone with whom he shared a rapport and who truly understood the Beatles' world.

Sensing a golden opportunity, Taylor seized the moment. "I’ll do it if you'll have me," he offered, his voice slightly wavering.

Despite his packed schedule, Taylor’s inner optimist—his "Dr. Pangloss"—blinded him to the stress of taking on more work.

Taylor later traveled to London to coordinate with the ambitious publisher Ernest Hecht.

Using Matt Busby’s biography as a template for the book's structure, Taylor officially became Epstein’s ghostwriter.

He harbored no literary pretensions about the project, viewing it simply as "journalism in a sturdy binding."

To complete the manuscript, Taylor took a hiatus from the Express

In April 1964, he and Epstein spent five days sequestered at the Imperial Hotel in Torquay, where Taylor meticulously recorded Brian’s recollections.

It was during these sessions that Epstein made a life-changing proposal: he invited Taylor to move to London as his personal assistant at NEMS, offering a weekly salary of £70.

Taylor didn't hesitate. He resigned from the Daily Express on April 17, 1964, and stepped into his new role within the Beatles' inner circle just forty-eight hours later.
