Today is Olivia Harrison's birthday, widow of George Harrison. Born Olivia Trinidad Arias on May 18, 1948, in Los Angeles, grandparents who had relocated to California after being raised in Guanajuato, Mexico. Her father, Zeke, earned a living as a dry cleaner while her mother, Mary Louise, was a seamstress; she grew up alongside her two siblings, Peter and Louise.
During her formative years in Los Angeles, she was immersed in a Spanish-speaking Mexican social circle. Reflecting on her youth in a 2016 conversation, she noted that Mexican cinema and music were staples of her home life—influenced by her father’s talents as a vocalist and guitarist—and she grew up admiring acts like Jorge Negrete, Trío Calaveras, and Trío Los Panchos. Her family eventually moved to Hawthorne, where she completed her secondary education at Hawthorne High School during the sixties.
Her professional journey began in 1972 at A&M Records, located at the historic Charlie Chaplin Studios in Hollywood. By 1974, while working in marketing, she was frequently in contact via long-distance calls with George Harrison, as A&M handled the distribution for his startup label, Dark Horse. Harrison was so struck by her professionalism that he coordinated for her to join Dark Horse Records exclusively.
The two finally met in person in October 1974 and quickly developed a romantic bond. Throughout the remainder of the decade, Arias managed a diverse group of musicians, including Ravi Shankar, Splinter, and Keni Burke. She was a highly skilled and composed manager who navigated the typical turbulence of launching a label and managing varied temperaments with ease.
Prior to her relationship with Harrison, Arias was already a student of meditation under the guidance of the Indian teacher Maharaj-ji. This mutual devotion to spiritual growth, combined with a vegetarian lifestyle, provided a grounding influence for Harrison and helped him reduce his dependency on alcohol and other substances. His 1976 release, Thirty Three & 1/3, showcased a brighter perspective, allowing him to share his beliefs without the harshness that reviewers felt had weighed down his earlier work. While touring to promote the album, Arias remarked that their connection was strengthened by their shared pursuit of higher spiritual goals, which made navigating daily life much simpler.
The couple welcomed their son, Dhani Harrison, on August 1, 1978, at the Princess Christian Nursing Home. They wed in a quiet ceremony at the Henley-on-Thames Register Office the following month. Their happiness during these years continued to influence George’s songwriting, much of which was composed at their retreat in Maui.
His 1979 self-titled record featured the track "Dark Sweet Lady," a tribute to the sense of rebirth Arias brought to his world. She was also a constant fixture in the studio; producer Giles Martin recalled that she was frequently the one literally manning the recording controls during his sessions.
