Award-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan is reportedly slated to portray Linda McCartney in director Sam Mendes' ambitious cinematic project, The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event.
According to reports from Deadline citing multiple sources, the star known for her roles in Lady Bird and Little Women is expected to play Paul McCartney's first wife. The actor cast as Paul McCartney is Paul Mescal, who previously co-starred with Ronan in the science fiction drama Foe. An official announcement from Sony has not yet been released.
The massive undertaking will feature four distinct films, each focusing on one member of the iconic band:
Barry Keoghan is cast as Ringo Starr.
Joseph Quinn will play George Harrison.
Harris Dickinson is set to be John Lennon. Dickinson, who recently received praise for his first directorial effort, Urchin, admitted to the Times that taking on the role feels "frightening."
In a recent development, Ringo Starr mentioned in July that he had requested revisions to the script after meeting with Mendes but is now "much more satisfied with how he’s depicted." The screenplays are being developed by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne.
Mendes, whose passion for the band is evident, stated in April, "The Beatles changed my understanding of music. I’ve been trying to make a movie about them for years." He added that he felt compelled to find a fresh approach to "tell the epic story for a new generation... I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that."
Ronan, who has earned four Oscar nominations, has a busy slate, having most recently appeared in The Outrun and Steve McQueen’s Blitz. She also led the dark comedy Bad Apples, which debuted at the Toronto film festival, and is set to star opposite Austin Butler in Deep Cuts, a music drama based on Holly Brickley's novel.
Linda McCartney was a professional photographer when she met Paul in 1967. They were married until her death in 1998. She was a member of his post-Beatles group, Wings, and was a dedicated animal rights activist who authored popular vegetarian cookbooks and established a successful food company.
