On Saturday, April 4, 2026, the Pigott Theatre at the British Library in London will host a unique gathering from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm, featuring an exclusive listening session and a panel discussion. Tickets are priced at £20, with doors opening at 2:00 pm.
(Update: This event is now Sold Out.)
The date marks a significant anniversary. On April 4, 1963, The Beatles performed a one-off concert at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire after a persistent student convinced them to book the gig. In the audience that day was 17-year-old John Bloomfield, armed with his brand-new reel-to-reel tape recorder.
His efforts captured the earliest known full-length recording of the band playing live in the UK, caught right at the precipice of their global superstardom. The tape features a 22-song setlist, blending tracks from their debut album Please Please Me with their favorite R&B covers, interspersed with candid banter with the crowd.
This special afternoon centers on a playback of that historic recording, which is now preserved within the British Library’s sound archive.
The Panel:
John Bloomfield will join broadcaster and author Samira Ahmed to recount the story of that day and how he captured the audio.
They will be joined by official photographer David Magnus, who was there to document the performance visually.
Renowned Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn will provide expert insight, framing the concert within the band's meteoric rise to fame.
