Captured during the whirlwind years of 1963 and 1964, the "Eyes of the Storm" exhibition at Nashville’s Frist Museum of Art offers a rare glimpse into the Beatles' meteoric rise through the lens of Paul McCartney’s own Pentax camera.
This collection of nearly 1,000 long-lost images documents the band’s evolution from Liverpool hopefuls to global icons, featuring intimate and unposed portraits of John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.
The photographs trace their journey from early performances with other artists to their high-profile return to Paris in 1964; unlike McCartney and Lennon's first humble hitchhiking trip to the French capital in 1961, this visit saw them living in luxury at the Hotel George V and playing grueling schedules at the Olympia Theatre.
McCartney’s growing skill for capturing movement is evident in shots from the Pathé Marconi Studios—where the group recorded German versions of their hits—as well as in candid frames like that of manager Neil Aspinall, who appears as a composed figure of calm navigating a blocky tape deck and the surrounding frenzy. This evocative display of rock-and-roll history remains open to the public at the Frist Museum through January 26, 2026.
