ELLIOT MINTZ DISCUSSES JOHN LENNON's FEELINGS FOR PAUL McCARTNEY IN THE 70s

Mintz said that John was jealous of Paul after he stepped out of the spotlight to raise his son Sean.

After the Beatles broke up in 1970, Paul McCartney and John Lennon experienced different levels of solo success — something that irked Lennon in the years before his tragic death, according to a friend.

John’s longtime friend and confidante Elliot Mintz appeared on Billy Corgan’s The Magnificent Others podcast on Wednesday, July 30, and opened up about John’s complicated feelings toward Paul in the 1970s.

Mintz, 80, continued, “At that time, John was just looking after Sean.

John would say to me, ‘They’re not embracing me the way they are him.’

And I said, ‘John, you’re not on a concert stage. You’re not in a stadium. You’re not making music,’ And he said, ‘You’re missing the point. They’re embracing his genius, but have you heard ‘Silly Love Songs’? And I would say, ‘Look, let’s be fair. He’s done things other than ‘Silly Love Songs.’ But that would go nowhere.”

Mintz, a media consultant and former Los Angeles radio and television host, says McCartney and Lennon went “through a whole mess of stuff together,” and noted that the two even wrote songs about the other.

In 1971, Paul released the song “Too Many People,” which seemingly took a jab at John for taking his “lucky break,” or his success with the Beatles, and “br[eaking] it in two.” Lennon, meanwhile, responded with the song “How Do You Sleep?,” which he later said summed up his “resentment toward Paul.” Lines included, “A pretty face may last a year or two/But pretty soon they’ll see what you can do/The sound you make is Muzak to my ears/You must have learned something in all those years.”

“It was like two high school kids arguing on Instagram,” Mintz said of their back-and-forth. “We had many talks about Paul, and John’s thoughts about him ranged.”   Mintz, who released the book We All Shine On last year about his time with Lennon and Ono, also recalled McCartney and his wife Linda stopping by to see Lennon and Ono at the Dakota in New York City on Christmas Day in 1978.

He said the group went for dinner at the celebrity hot spot Elaine’s, but weren’t impressed by the menu, and ended up ordering a pizza to the restaurant at Linda’s suggestion. Afterward, they went back to the Dakota, and John and Paul looked out the window over Manhattan as the sun set and Christmas lights were turned on.

“Paul said, ‘I’m always making music. I make music every day of my life. I can’t stop making music,’” Mintz recalled. “And I thought to myself as I sat on the couch, ‘What would have happened if John bit the bait and said, ‘I got a couple of guitars in the other room. What if I bring them out just for the hell of it?’ And the two of them could’ve sat in the living room and changed the face of contemporary music.”

Paul regularly pays tribute to John on his birthday each year on social media. This past year, he shared a recent photo of him performing in front of a photo of Lennon, and wrote, “Happy Birthday John. Thanks for being there.”
