The budget for the first Old Grey Whistle Test series was £500 a show –
and that included rights, appearance money and set designs. The
presenters were paid £40 a show. When Bob Harris told John Lennon that,
in line with BBC regulations, the former Beatles star had to receive a
£15 payment in order to appear, Lennon said: "Bring me £15-worth of
chocolate olivers, I can't get them in America."
