- 1955
- George Smith dies. He was the maternal uncle, through marriage, of John Lennon. In 1955, at the age of 52, Smith suffered a fatal liver hemorrhage at his residence on a Sunday and was subsequently laid to rest within the family plot at the St. Peter’s Church cemetery in Woolton. When this occurred, fourteen-year-old Lennon was away in Sango Bay, Durness, Scotland, visiting relatives of the Stanley clan; he remained unaware of the loss until he arrived back home.
