Paul McCartney has joined a growing music industry initiative protesting the unauthorized use of copyrighted material by artificial intelligence firms. His contribution is a new recording—his first in five years—that is almost entirely silent.
The track, which lacks his signature melodies and playful guitar work, is meant to be a symbolic statement. Instead of evocative lyrics and catchy tunes, listeners are presented with a simple, quiet hiss and occasional studio noise.
This unusual piece is titled "(bonus track)" and is featured on the B-side of an upcoming vinyl LP called "Is This What We Want?", an album otherwise filled with similar silent recordings.
McCartney's involvement comes as artists are intensifying their efforts to convince the UK government to implement regulations that would prevent tech companies from utilizing their creative output to train AI models without securing the necessary permissions or providing appropriate compensation. Prominent artists such as Kate Bush, Sam Fender, Hans Zimmer, and the Pet Shop Boys have already publicly supported this campaign.
Despite its lack of traditional content, the track is structured: it quickly rises to 55 seconds of tape hiss, followed by a 15-second segment of unspecified sounds—perhaps a door opening or someone moving—before concluding with another 80 seconds of hiss interspersed with rustling sounds, and finally fading out in a deliberate, emotive close.
