THE BEATLES ROOFTOP CONCERT: 56 YEARS AGO

Today, January 30th, marks the 56th anniversary of an iconic moment in music history: the Beatles' surprise rooftop concert at Apple Corps, their studio on Savile Row, London. It was a cold day, but the energy emanating from the rooftop was contagious.

Without warning, John, Paul, George, and Ringo, accompanied by keyboardist Billy Preston, emerged onto the roof to perform a handful of songs. People gathered in the streets, on rooftops, and at windows, creating an atmosphere of excitement and awe.

The rooftop concert became an unforgettable memory in the minds of Beatles fans. Today, 56 years later, its legacy lives on, inspiring new generations of musicians and music lovers.

the band played a 42-minute set before the Metropolitan Police arrived and ordered them to reduce the volume. It was the final public performance of their career. They performed nine takes of five new songs as crowds of onlookers, many on lunch breaks, congregated in the streets and on the rooftops of nearby buildings to listen. The concert ended with "Get Back", and John Lennon joking, "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we've passed the audition."

The entire performance was filmed and recorded, and footage was used in the 1970 documentary film Let It Be and the 2021 documentary series The Beatles: Get Back. The first performance of "I've Got a Feeling" and single takes of "One After 909" and "Dig a Pony" were also featured on the accompanying album. On 28 January 2022, the audio of the full rooftop performance was released to streaming services under the title Get Back – The Rooftop Performance. In February 2022, Disney released the entire concert sequence as presented in The Beatles: Get Back in IMAX as The Beatles: Get Back – The Rooftop Concert

Following their 1973 masterpiece Band on the Run, Wings reached another peak with Venus and Mars. Released on May 27, 1975, the album features the US Number One single 'Listen To What The Man Said' and the fan-favourite 'Letting Go'.

This special 50th anniversary vinyl edition, cut at half speed from the original master tapes by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, meticulously reproduces the original UK 1LP pressing. It includes recreations of the original stickers and two posters with photography by Aubrey Powell and Sylvia de Swaan.

Wings
Venus and Mars 50th Anniversary Edition
Coming 21st March 2025

Commemorate the 50th anniversary of Wings’ fourth studio album Venus and Mars with a half-speed master edition out 21 March, 2025.

One of the world’s most beloved rock outfits, Wings came to define the era of 1970s arena rock, while dominating the airwaves with no fewer than 14 US Top 10 hits and 12 Top 10 hits in the UK. Following their 1973 masterpiece Band on the Run, Venus and Mars would represent another peak of Wings’ creative and commercial heyday. The band’s fourth studio album, it was released on 27 May 1975 ahead of the legendary Wings Over the World tour. Preceded by the US Number One single ‘Listen To What The Man Said’ and featuring ‘Letting Go’, a fan favourite in Paul’s live set to this day, Venus and Mars hit Number One in the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic and went on to sell over 4 million copies worldwide.

This special 50th anniversary vinyl edition was cut at half speed using a high-resolution transfer of the original master tapes from 1975 by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. The album is presented as a meticulous reproduction of the original UK pressing, with recreations of the original “Venus and Mars are alright tonight” circular sticker and “comparative sizes of sun and planets” bookmark sticker, and comes with two posters with photography by Aubrey Powell and Sylvia de Swaan. The iconic album artwork by Hipgnosis has been meticulously recreated and presented in a gatefold sleeve.

Venus and Mars will also be available in Dolby Atmos for the first time, newly mixed by Giles Martin and Steve Orchard.

Less than one year after Band on the Run’s release, the first recording sessions for Venus and Mars took place in November 1974, and featured a revamped Wings line-up. Following the departure of Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough on the eve of the Band on the Run sessions in Lagos, Paul and Linda McCartney and Denny Laine were now joined by guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton. After recording ‘Letting Go’, ‘Medicine Jar’ and ‘Love In Song’ at Abbey Road Studios, Wings left London for New Orleans’ Sea Saint Studios, facing another unexpected line-up shift with Geoff Britton’s exit, recruiting Joe English to complete the album.

In tandem with Venus and Mars’ topping the charts worldwide, the album’s predecessor Band on the Run was continuing to build its global multi-platinum popularity. With a powerful new line-up solidified, Wings’ response to the overwhelming demand surrounding them was to launch the Wings Over the World tour -- a 65-date run of shows starting in 1975 and stretching into October 1976.

The first Wings release for 2025, Venus and Mars follows 2024’s theatrical release of the rare Wings live-in-studio performance film One Hand Clapping and its accompanying album landing in the Best of 2024 lists of Billboard, Uproxx and the Los Angeles Times, as well as last year’s 50th anniversary edition of Band on the Run. More exciting celebratory Wings activity and announcements are soon set to follow.

PAUL McCARTNEY GIVES HIS OPINION ON THE NEW BRITISH COPYRIGHT LAW

Paul McCartney has seen the music industry shift many times. Even as online streaming services began replacing radio airplay, Paul still managed to find success. Now, however, Paul is sounding the alarm about a new copyright law in UK that he says could prove detrimental to up-and-coming artists.

According to the BBC, the UK government is mulling changes to copyright law. If implemented, AI developers could legally use online creators’ content to help develop their models.
Although the copyright holder would have the chance to opt out, Paul McCartney warned that such changes could stifle creativity and eliminate incentives for writers and artists.

“You get young guys, girls, coming up, and they write a beautiful song, and they don’t own it, and they don’t have anything to do with it,” the “Band on the Run” singer told the BBC. “And anyone who wants can just rip it off.”

The money is going somewhere, McCartney said. And why shouldn’t it go to “the guy who sat down and wrote Yesterday?”

He reminded the government that “it’s your job” to protect the people. “So you know, if you’re putting through a bill, make sure you protect the creative thinkers, the creative artists, or you’re not going to have them,” he said.

PAUL McCARTNEY: INTERVIEW FOR THE DAILY MIRROR, 1967

On December 28th, the interview with Don Short was published in the Daily Mirror.

Paul McCartney said: (on the film, “Magical Mystery Tour”)

“I got the general impression there was something wrong with it,” said Paul at his home in St. John’s Wood, London.
“Aren’t we entitled to have a flop? It’s hard because it’s our first, but we’ll get used to the idea. The lesson is good for us and we’re not bitter about it.”

It wasn’t supposed to be about anything. It wasn’t supposed to have a theme or a plot. Everyone was looking for a plot. But purposely, it wasn’t there. And the more people kept seeking a plot the worse it must have become for them. We did it as a series of disconnected, unconnected events. They were not meant to have any depth. It was our interpretation of ‘magical’ — and to us, that meant we could do anything.”
