HOW AND WHERE TO CELEBRATE A WOULD-BE LANDMARK BIRTHDAY TODAY

October 9 would have been John Lennon’s 75th birthday. His widow, Yoko Ono has already marked the occasion by creating a huge human peace sign in New York’s Central Park on Tuesday. Here’s what else is happening across the globe to mark the event.
 

Cavern Club Concert
Where: Cavern Club, Liverpool
When: October 9, 8.30pm
What's happening: The Cavern’s resident tribute band The Cavern Club Beatles are joined by a Brazilian band called Harsh Blues playing John’s solo material and The Original Quarrymen, the band Lennon played with in the '50s, playing their old tunes and sharing stories from their days playing with Lennon.

Hollywood Vigil
Where: Lennon’s star, Hollywood Walk Of Fame, Vine Street, Los Angeles
When: October 9, 6pm
What's happening: The annual Walk Of Fame vigil has been moved from December 8, the date of Lennon’s death, to his birthday this year. Alongside the usual flowers, candles and singalongs, performance artist Gregory Adamson will create a huge Lennon mural, Lesley Perdomo will draw a pavement chalk portrait and you can sign a large birthday card to John, which will be presented to Yoko.

Reykjavik Imagine Peace Tower
Where: Viðey Island, Reykjavík
When: October 9, 8pm
What’s happening: Yoko will be spending John’s Birthday in Iceland, where every year the Imagine Peace Tower – a huge beam of light cast skyward – is lit between the dates of Lennon’s birth and death.

Birthday Cake Auction
Where: Beatles Story, Albert Dock, Liverpool
When: October 9, 11am
What’s happening: There are a host of events taking place across Liverpool to mark Lennon’s birthday, including a charity performance of Beatles musical Let It Be, a special 9am-5pm coach tour of Lennon sites around the city and a commemorative afternoon tea at the Hard Day’s Night Hotel featuring Lennon’s favourite cocktail, the brandy alexander. But perhaps the most in-John’s-spirit will be an event at the Beatles Story museum in Albert Dock, where a giant chocolate birthday cake will be unveiled and then auctioned for the Imagine No Food Poverty charity campaign.

Church Service
Where: St Peter’s Church, Liverpool
When: October 9, 2pm
What’s happening: A ceremony both to honour John and unveil a refurbished grave for his uncle George will be held at St Peter’s – where John and Paul first met - also featuring music from The Quarrymen and Cavern resident musician Mark Bloor.

Lennon Park Walk
Where: Yew Tree Road car park, Liverpool
When: October 9, 1pm
What’s happening: What better way to commemorate Lennon’s life than tramping around the trees he used to fall out of as a child? The Liverpool Park Rangers are organising a walk around Lennon’s favourite childhood scrumping and stick-lobbing haunts. Bring sturdy boots.

What’s happening: Written by Irish playwright Stephen Kennedy, Liverpudlian actor Ian Hart will perform a dramatic hour-long ‘documentary theatre’ monologue called John Lennon’s Last Day, following Lennon’s final 24 hours “in forensic detail” from Anne Liebowitz photo session to Yoko studio time to his tragic assassination. The piece features archive interviews and music from Lennon, including his chilling words from that very day: “My work won’t be finished till I’m dead and buried – and I hope that’s a long long time.”

What’s happening: Seattle’s premier Lennon tribute band Apple Jam head to Washington for their 10th annual tribute gig, doing two shows on the big day focusing on early Beatles tunes and rarities. “You can expect to hear iconic oldies that the most devoted fans will know,” they say, “such as ‘Come Go With Me’, one that Lennon sang, with his own words, at that memorable Liverpool garden fete where Paul McCartney first met him; and ‘Twenty Flight Rock’, the one Paul played for John after that show to impress him.”

Remember Lennon: Imagine 75
Where: College Street Music Hall, New Haven, Connecticut

What’s happening: Lennon impersonator Peter Gendron recreates his rarely-played and much celebrated multi-media staging of the sort of show Lennon might be playing today if he were alive. It’ll be Gendron’s final performance as Lennon after years of mimicking the singer in Beatles tribute acts and exclusive solo Lennon shows.
