An historical marker will be unveiled at the airport's central terminal on February 7

An as-yet unnamed historical marker to celebrate the 50 years since The Beatles' first US press conference will be held at John F Kennedy Airport this week (February 7). The New York Port Authority, which manages the airport as well as other infrastructure in the city, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which launched the band's career stateside, at an event at the airport's central terminal. 

 Billboard reports that Port Authority executive director Pat Foye and deputy executive director Deb Gramiccioni will take charge of the ceremony. In other events to mark the anniversary of the band's first US TV performance, The Late Show With David Letterman has invited artists to cover tracks by The Beatles. 

Last night (February 3) Broken Bells performed 'And I Love Her' while Sting will play 'Drive My Car' tonight (4). Later on this week (February 6), Sean Lennon will join The Flaming Lips to perform 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds'. More artists are to be announced during the week. 

Last month, Paul and Ringo reunited on stage last month at a recording of The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles. The show was recorded on January 27, one day after this year's Grammy Awards, and will be aired on February 9, exactly 50 years after the Beatles made their US television debut.
