GEORGE SUFFERED FROM OCD, NEW BOOK SAYS

While a slew of celebrities have admitted their battles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder --Howard Stern, Megan Fox, and Howie Mandel, among them -- the bestselling book BackStage Pass VIP says late Beatle George Harrisonalso had symptoms of the neurological disorder.
“While under extreme personal and professional pressures in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, Harrison’s OCD symptoms accelerated," BackStage Pass VIP authorDebra Sharon Davis said. "His need for order, extreme neatness and disciplining his life to be controlled and predictable was stifling -- a burdensome form of self-imprisonment."
One of Davis's examples of Harrison's OCD behavior manifesting itself came when George recorded his album All Things Must Pass in 1970, as colleagues and co-workers who were present at the time cited an unusual practice on his part.

“At his recording sessions Harrison employed a tea boy, a fellow whose sole job was to brew tea and immediately tidy up the empty cups and scattered napkins," Davis wrote. "The tea boy was under strict orders -- no sooner did a musician put down his cup then it was instantly confiscated along with soiled napkins.
"It appeared that for Harrison, wrestling with OCD symptoms, one wayward teacup or crumbled napkin constituted a distracting, paralyzing, chaotic mess that hindered his concentration and made him extremely nervous.”
Davis said the Beatle, who died in 2001, "had surgically structured his life as if he was balancing on a flimsy tightrope above a pool of crocodiles."

LIVERPOOL HOME OF RINGO TO BE SAVED

Beatles drummer Ringo Star's old house, centre, in Madryn Street, which the council are worried that fans of the performer will try to steal bricks from before it is due to be demolished

THE childhood home of Ringo Starr will be saved from demolition thanks to a £2m government grant. The terrace where the Beatles drummer was born on Madryn Street, Dingle, could now go into the hands of the National Trust and become a tourist attraction. Liverpool’s Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Richard Kemp today confirmed that 117 properties in what are known as the Welsh Streets will be saved.

A debate on what should become of the 11 Welsh streets has raged for eight years, with one side saying they should be demolished and the land developed, and the other claiming the Victorian terraces should be restored to their former glory. Speaking to the ECHO today Cllr Kemp who is chairman of Plus Dane, the social landlord who owns a large number of the Welsh Street properties, said he was “very pleased” with the news. He said: “I don’t know any of the details yet, other than we’ll be bringing 117 properties back into use. These will be properties people want to live in. It wasn’t the original plan, but times have changed. This is the right thing to do with the circumstances of the housing market at the moment.”

Speaking about Ringo’s house, Cllr Kemp said that was one of the properties earmarked for saving, and there are hopes to strike a deal with the National Trust for them to take on the property, as they have with John Lennon’s childhood home Mendips on Menlove Avenue, and 20 Forthlin Road in Allerton, where Sir Paul McCartney grew up. The news was welcomed by campaigners who have been battling to save the properties from the wrecking ball. Nina Edge, from the Welsh Streets Home Group, said: “We always hoped that some of this lovely place could be spared the bulldozer, especially with so many people in housing need. “When we met Joe Anderson last year he said he would consider a viable alternative to demolition for part of the Welsh Streets. We are so glad an alternative has now come up. “Until we see these streets officially removed from the demolition zone and agreed by Liverpool council it will seem unreal though. Fingers crossed they really mean it.” Details of exactly which properties will be saved must now be worked out, and activists were hoping to be able to get around the table and put forward their views on the future of the Welsh streets. Jonathan Brown, of the Merseyside Civic Society, said: “This is tribute to the tenacity of the residents who have been campaigning for so long."

BOB GRUEN CAPTA A LOS INMORTALES DEL ROCK

Bob Gruen's iconic images of rock

STUART SUTCLIFFE’S OLD HUYTON SCHOOL PARK VIEW SAVED

FIFTH Beatle Stuart Sutcliffe’s former school was spared the axe amid fears of a pupil exodus. In December the ECHO revealed how Knowsley council was proposing to close Park View primary in Huyton where bassist Sutcliffe, synonymous with The Beatles’ Hamburg heyday in the Sixties, was a pupil between 1946-1950.Pupils would have transferred to a nearby and revamped Roby Park in a move to reduce surplus places. But council chiefs are set to rip up their plans amid a backlash from parents furious at the prospect of losing the school which has served the community for eight decades.

LAVISH PHOTO BOOK BINGS BACK MEMORIES OF THE BEATLES

If every photographer is forever linked to one picture, Harry Benson — who has photographed presidents, movie stars and Robert Kennedy’s assassination, among other things — knows precisely what will define him. “The pillow fight,” he says, giving the nod to his black-and-white shot of four very young, very playful Beatles goofing around in a Paris hotel room in 1964. “It’s my favorite. Every photographer comes down to one picture he took in his life. I don’t mind this being the one for me.”

The photograph — a funny, indelible image of the most famous musical performers in history acting like a bunch of giddy kids — is one of hundreds in the hefty, staggeringly gorgeous new limited edition of The Beatles On the Road 1964-1966,which publisher Taschen will launch Wednesday at its Miami Beach store with an exhibition and signing by Benson. The book, expertly designed by art director Josh Baker, chronicles the whirlwind of life on tour: live appearances, rabid crowds climbing on limos, the set of A Hard Day’s Night, even a few elegant portraits of rare quiet moments amid the hysteria. The price is steep ($700), but 200 lavish art editions, which came with a silver gelatin print signed by Benson, sold out quickly; serious fans of photography could not wait to get their hands on the book.

INTERVIEW WITH JAMES MCCARTNEY - THE ROXY THEATRE

Here's a brief interview -James in advance of  Los Angeles´ show coming up at the Roxy...
Photo- James in Sasquatch Festival yesterday :

Thursday, May 31, rock n’ roll royalty returns to the fabled Sunset Strip with Beatle progeny James McCartney. Having painstakingly crafted his own critically acclaimed and unique pop sound, McCartney has for years been patiently stowing away musical gems, until he felt both the music, and a career as a solo artist, were ready to stand on their own merits.
Retrace this road to solo stardom, as the humble and heartfelt scion of Sir Paul speaks about the personal stories behind his songs, his off-duty hobbies and embracing his legendary lineage.
You didn’t release your first solo material until 2010? Why wait so long?
Well honestly, I just wanted to wait until I had the strongest possible collection of songs before introducing them to everyone. And I wanted to do this in the right way; so I waited until I felt both the music and myself were ready.
I would imagine you would be pretty stressed/apprehensive about releasing your own solo material given your lineage? Do you worry or care much about “expectations?”
I’m not really… I mostly want to enjoy letting it all happen as much as possible, and then just be who I am. I like to embrace the connections to my family and my lineage, without either running towards it, or running away from it.
Tell us about the track “I Love You Dad.” Is there a particular story behind it?
Well my dad had just written “Dance Tonight,” and he’d been playing a lot of mandolin. He gave me a mandolin for Christmas, and I loved it and started playing it a lot. I was walking around my kitchen and playing this riff––quite like he’s doing in the video for that song in fact––and I was thinking of my dad. That riff became the basis for the song. In some ways, it’s a bit like my own version of his song “Here Today” in that I was trying to say something very heartfelt to him, in the same way he does to John in his song.
When you’re not playing music, what do you like to do in your spare time? What are your non-music related hobbies?
Meditation is a big part of my life, and I often do work with the David Lynch Foundation. I also love painting, sculpture and reading. Recently I did something really fun… I did some voice-over work for a cool animated feature called The Beach Chronicles, which was an official selection at the Miami Film Festival this year. That was great!
This is your second show on The Sunset Strip. Does this area hold any significance for you personally?
Oh, just great memories mostly… hanging out with my family, Jeff Lynne (ELO), Dave Grohl. Yeah, I love L.A.
What are you most proud of in your life?
Of being a songwriter, of writing songs. I really love this new song I just wrote in fact…

"MY VALENTINE" MUSIC VIDEO TO BE SCREENED BEFORE "THE INTOUCHABLES"

With his directorial debut Paul has created a moving homage to photographer Irving Penn featuring Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp signing the words to his song ‘My Valentine’.
The video is now set to grace cinema screens in the USA from today appearing before The Weinstein Company’s film ‘The Intouchables’.
PAUL TOLD US,“My daughter, Stella, suggested the original idea to have Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp use sign language to portray my recent song, MY VALENTINE When I showed the finished film to Harvey, he suggested that it could be shown before one of the films he was releasing this year. It was very kind of him to suggest this and I’m excited to hear that it will be shown at many cinemas before his new release, The Intouchables. Harvey has been a great friend for many years and I hope he’ll remain so for many years to come.”
HARVEY WEINSTEIN SAID,"What an honor it is to have Paul’s short film directorial debut on the head of our INTOUCHABLES showings. Paul and Stella are great old friends. He was the first musician to say yes to perform at the 9/11 concert for New York, which I produced along with our friends John Sykes and Jim Dolan. Stella had a wonderful idea when she thought this song would translate well into a film, and I can’t wait to share it with our audiences when THE INTOUCHABLES comes out on May 25.”

STELLA MCCARTNEY DONS SWIRL PRINT DRESS FOR CHARITY POP ART BALL

Since her Team GB Olympic kit was unveiled in March, the London fashion designer has been keeping a relatively low profile.
But last night Stella McCartney got back into the swing of things as she attended a pop art themed charity ball in the capital
Wearing an eye-catching swirl print dress from her eponymous label, the 40-year-old looked happy and relaxed as she joined a host of fashion friends including Agyness Denn, Natalia Vodianova and Naomi Watts.
 Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney opted for an eye-catching swirl-print dress and strappy heels
And it seems the event was a great promotional event for the acclaimed designer, as a number of guests opted for pieces from her collection.

Both Agyness and Natalia opted for floor-length gowns from her latest range.
Agyness sported a gold-embroidered, short-sleeved cream dress paired with chunky, beige wedges, while Natalia picked a royal blue, strapless lace dress with a belted, peplum waist.
The charity fundraiser, held at Banqueting House, Whitehall, was in aid of the NSPCC Rebuilding Childhoods Appeal, which helps fund post-abuse therapy for children who have suffered abuse.
As co-chairs of the event Stella McCartney and Natalia Vodianova took to the stage to give a speech
The first annual art ball - the Surrealist Ball - raised £2.8 million in March 2011 and this year over £1.1 million was collected.
After a drinks reception guests feasted on minted garden pea and truffle soup and roast halibut with Morecombe bay brown shrimps.
And a 'Pop' passion fruit mousse was served to finish.
Other guests to appear at the event sponsored by UBS, included actresses Naomi Watts and Rashida Jones.
Urban Caprice catered for the event while Boujis hosted the bar.
