“HAMBURG DAYS”: A SERIES EXPLORING THE BEATLES’ CRITICAL YEARS

Production is officially in progress for “Hamburg Days,” a new six-part drama chronicling The Beatles’ residency in Germany

With cameras rolling in Hamburg, Munich, and Liverpool, the production team has unveiled its lead cast: Rhys Mannion (John Lennon), Ellis Murphy (Paul McCartney), Harvey Brett (George Harrison), Louis Landau (Stu Sutcliffe), and Patrick Gilmore (Pete Best). Key supporting roles include Luna Jordan as Astrid Kirchherr and Casper von Bülow as Klaus Voorman, with Laura Tonke, Trystan Pütter, and Max von der Groeben completing the lineup.

Developed by Benjamin Benedict, the production is spearheaded by showrunner Christian Schwochow (noted for The Crown) and lead writer Jamie Carragher (of Succession fame). The narrative draws its inspiration from the personal memoirs of German artist Klaus Voormann.

Set against the backdrop of the 1960s, "Hamburg Days" delves into the gritty, neon-lit clubs of St. Pauli, where a raw rock 'n' roll outfit from Liverpool encounters visionary artists Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann. This intersection of talent and style ignites the evolution of a ragtag group of teens into a global musical juggernaut.

To capture the era's authentic sound, BAFTA-winning producer David Holmes is overseeing the musical curation. The project is a joint effort between W&B Television and Turbine Studios, backed by AGC Television and ZDF, while the BBC has secured the rights for UK broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer.

Directorial duties are shared between Schwochow and Laura Lackmann, with Andor cinematographer Frank Lamm capturing the visuals. Notably, Klaus Voormann himself serves as the series' exclusive consultant.

The executive production team features a robust lineup including Schwochow, Carragher, Benedict, Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, Andrew Eaton, Justin Thomson, Stuart Ford, Lourdes Diaz, and Miguel A. Palos Jr. At ZDF, the series is managed by Alexandra Staib, Caroline von Senden, and Sandra Dettki, with Isabel Haug and Katharina Haase acting as producers.

The drama is made possible through funding from several major German film bodies, including the GMPF and MOIN Filmförderung. International distribution, excluding the UK and Germany, is being managed by AGC Intl.

LOSING A PIECE OF 1962 BEATLES HISTORY

The mast of the ship Salvor, a piece of Beatles history from a 1962 photoshoot, is about to be sold for scrap following a lack of interest in this historical artifact.

A key piece of The Beatles‘ history is set to be sold off for scrap after Liverpool City Council reported “no interest” in re-homing efforts.

The mast of the ship Salvor looms over the very first photograph of the Beatles after Ringo Starr joined the line-up in 1962.

From there, the mast stood on a roundabout near the iconic Liver Buildings for several decades before roadworks in 2020 forced the huge object to be moved to a yard in Newton Road for temporary storage. However, there are no further plans for the piece of Liverpool’s history. Maritime campaigner Peter Elson has called for the local council to honour a previous commitment, which stated that they would find a new home for the large mast.

Elson, who managed to get the council to hold off on selling it for scrap, shared, “It’s deeply sad that a washed-up, clapped-out old hack like me has to be doing this. It’s a no-brainer that a massive piece of Beatles memorabilia like that should be saved, yet they were going to sell it for scrap.”

He added that the Council should have “learned after that whole own goal with The Cavern and Ringo’s house in Madryn Street, which they were going to demolish until a campaign was launched to save it.”

Nonetheless, it appears that the City Council feel that they are all out of options. A spokesperson has said, “We have previously reached out to our maritime network, but unfortunately, there has been no interest in taking it.”

Allegedly, a plan was underway to send the mast to China for a Liverpool university campus; this was eventually abandoned.

The Council added, “It needs someone who has the means to rehome, recommission and maintain it for years to come. If anyone does come forward as a result of the campaign, we are happy to hold discussions with them.”
