PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS HEAD TO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME

A collection of Paul McCartney’s instruments, stage outfits, handwritten lyrics, never-before-seen photos, and tour memorabilia will be featured in an exhibition at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this summer. The exhibit is billed as the first major museum showcase dedicated to McCartney and Wings.

“Paul McCartney and Wings” —composed of items from the musician's personal archives, as well as donations from band members and collaborators— will focus on the period spanning from McCartney’s self-titled solo debut in 1970, the formation of Wings in 1971, and the group's eventual dissolution in 1981.

The exhibition opens May 15 at the Hall’s headquarters in Cleveland, where McCartney has been inducted twice: as a member of The Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1999. Tickets are on sale now.

In recent years, McCartney has offered glimpses into his career and life through initiatives such as "Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm" (images he took during Beatlemania), as well as the books Wings: The Story of the Band on the Run and The Lyrics.

ON THIS DAY MARCH 12 ...

1963

The group performed at the Granada in Bedford during the Chris Montez and Tommy Roe tour. A portion of the show was captured for the BBC program "Here We Go," though John Lennon was absent due to a cold. Later that afternoon, the BBC aired a previously recorded session of the same show.

1964

In the Studio 3 control room, stereo mixing was conducted for the German-language tracks "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand" and "Sie Liebt Dich."

Under the direction of George Martin and Norman Smith, these remixes were prepared specifically for release in the United States and Germany.

1965

Filming for the movie "Help!" concluded in the Bahamas.

Meanwhile, the New York Daily News featured an interview with Brian Epstein, who predicted the band's enduring fame and praised the Rolling Stones.

Additionally, Epstein signed the group The Silkie to a management deal and helped them land a contract with Philips.

1969

The day began with Paul McCartney marrying Linda Eastman at the Marylebone Register Office, followed by a religious blessing at St. John’s Wood and a celebration at the Ritz.

That same morning, Detective Norman Pilcher searched George Harrison’s home. While George and Pattie attended a party, police later arrested them at their "Kinfaus" residence for cannabis possession.

In the studio, mixing sessions occurred for "The Long And Winding Road" and "Let It Be," while "Yellow Submarine" finished its final week on the UK charts.

1971

The single "Power To The People" was released in the UK. Simultaneously, the legal proceedings at the Royal Courts of Justice concluded, resulting in Paul McCartney successfully winning his lawsuit to appoint a receiver for the band's finances and remove Allen Klein's control.

1982

Recording sessions commenced at Startling Studios for the album "Old Wave," with Jim Nipar overseeing the production of the basic tracks.

ABBEY CINEMA, WHERE JOHN AND GEORGE USED TO GO, NOW STANDS ABANDONED

Once a vibrant cultural landmark in Liverpool, the Abbey Cinema holds a special place in the hearts of the thousands who graced its halls during the golden age of British film. Opening its doors in March 1939 with a screening of Joy of Living, the Sir Alfred Ernest Shennan-designed theater was a masterpiece of its time, boasting neon-lit ornate columns, a luxurious bar, and even a goldfish pond in the foyer. It was a favorite haunt for young John Lennon and George Harrison, yet despite its storied past, the Wavertree site has sat empty for over six years.

The building’s journey since closing as a cinema in 1979 has been a turbulent one; it transitioned through various identities—from a bingo and snooker hall to a series of three different supermarkets. Its future faced a major threat when Lidl purchased the site with plans to demolish the structure for a new store. However, fierce local opposition and the building’s eventual Grade II listing in 2021 forced the retailer to pivot. Though Lidl later proposed a restoration project that would preserve the iconic corner rotunda and original aesthetic, they ultimately withdrew the application in early 2023, citing excessive delays, and put the property back on the market.

In a more recent development toward the end of 2024, reports surfaced of squatters occupying the vacant shell, prompting local council members to call for humanitarian support for those inside. Today, despite its architectural significance and deep ties to Beatles history, the Abbey remains a silent, uninhabited monument, waiting for a developer willing to honor its heritage.
