Actor Paul Mescal has confirmed he will be singing himself while portraying the legendary Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes's upcoming series of biographical films. He said: "Yep, yeah, absolutely. Hell yeah."
Mescal said that he and McCartney have now met in real life, calling Macca "an extraordinary man."
"It’s a crazy sentence to say that I’ve spent time with that man, let
alone play him," continued the History of Sound actor, adding that he will "absolutely" be doing his own singing as McCartney.
Paul Mescal, an actor known for his work in the 2022 musical drama Carmen and upcoming role in the film adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along, recently confirmed that he will be singing live on screen as Paul McCartney in a new series of biographical films directed by Sam Mendes. Mescal's announcement, in which he stated, "Hell yeah," has created a lot of buzz among Beatles and film fans, as it signifies his commitment to an authentic portrayal of the famous musician.
In many musical biopics, actors lip-sync to the original recordings, but Mescal's decision to use his own voice is reminiscent of Joaquin Phoenix's Oscar-winning performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. This choice could allow Mescal to form a deeper connection with the character, making for a more genuine and believable performance. Mescal, who has met the legendary musician in person, said that it was "a crazy sentence to say that I've spent time with that man, let alone play him."
The upcoming films are set to be released in 2028, and many are excited to see how Mescal's acting and musical abilities will combine to bring Paul McCartney to life. His performance could not only please longtime fans but also introduce a new generation to the music of The Beatles.
