WINGS: THE BIRTH OF A NEW BAND

On this date, the Daily Mirror reported that Paul McCartney had started a new music group alongside his wife, Linda. However, the article did not provide details about the band's name or who the other members were.

A day later, on August 4, 1971, a follow-up article disclosed the full lineup: drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist Denny Laine—formerly of the Moody Blues—joined Paul and Linda in the group.

According to New Musical Express in its August 7, 1971 issue, the band was expected to be called "the Paul McCartney Blues Band." However, the final name didn’t come to Paul until after the birth of his second daughter, Stella, on September 13, 1971.

Deborah Thomas of the Daily Mirror was the first to break the news about Paul McCartney’s new band. The announcement came just two days after the Concert for Bangladesh, suggesting the timing was intentional. Although Paul had been invited to perform, he declined—unwilling to give Allen Klein the satisfaction of a Beatles reunion. The press criticized him heavily for his absence. With this announcement, Paul was clearly signaling that he was moving forward—not just for a one-off show, but with a long-term commitment. At that point, the group didn’t yet have a name, prompting New Musical Express to speculate it might be called “McCartney’s Blues Band.”

"The new band has been in the recording studios for some time now and they’ve got a lot of music down, which we hope to get out before the end of the year. They are very excited by the music they’ve been making."

-Shelley Turner of McCartney Productions Ltd – From Daily Mirror, August 4, 1971

"Linda is expecting a child in the Autumn, and Paul doesn’t want a pregnant pianist on stage. The band has been working very hard lately, and they’ll all be taking a holiday. Paul and Linda are going to the Mediterranean. Paul is also doing his utmost to finalise a contract on paper as to what he is now. He has high hopes of resolving the present problems with the rest of the Beatles in the very near future." -Shelley Turner – From Melody Maker, August 7, 1971

Miss Shelley Towers who runs McCartney Productions, said : “The new band has been in the recording studios for some time now and they’ve got a lot of music down, which we hope to get out before the end of the year. They are very excited by the music they’ve been making.

From Daily Mirror, August 4, 1971:

A new group led by Paul McCartney is expected to be officially announced soon.

Paul McCartney has been secretly working on the project for a while.

His wife, Linda, is a member of the band, along with well-known musicians Denny Laine and Denny Seiwell.

The group has already been recording an album that is scheduled to be released in the fall.

The music is described as being blues-heavy, and sources suggest the band will be called the Paul McCartney Blues Band. It's also very likely that the group will eventually tour.
