The legendary 1965 Beatles concert at Shea Stadium, an event that cemented rock and roll’s place in sports venues, will be celebrated by the New York Mets. The baseball team will commemorate the 60th anniversary of this historic performance with a special night dedicated to the British band on August 15, when they face the Seattle Mariners at Citi Field.
The performance by the Fab Four was groundbreaking, marking the first time a rock band headlined a massive stadium concert. A 50-minute documentary, "The Beatles at Shea Stadium", immortalized the event that took place at the then-home of the Mets and the New York Jets.
To honor this date, the celebration will begin with a tribute concert at 6:15 p.m. by 1964 The Tribute. The first 15,000 attendees will receive a replica of the old Shea Stadium. The festivities will continue during the game, with the ceremonial first pitch being thrown by staff who worked at that 1965 show. The night will culminate with a themed fireworks display.
