Zak Starkey, the son of the iconic Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, recently looked back on a missed chance to play with Black Sabbath.
He recounted having to decline an invitation to perform with the legendary band and record an album, a decision he's since come to regret.
Instead of a typical tribute, Starkey shared a screenshot of an email from Sharon Osbourne. The email revealed that Black Sabbath was set to headline major festivals like Download (June 10) and Lollapalooza (August 3 in Chicago). More significantly, they were looking for a drummer to record an album in September with renowned producer Rick Rubin, a commitment that would require about 2-3 weeks. The email also contained a humorous, clearly facetious line about Ozzy's desire, which Starkey explicitly clarified he didn't regret declining.
At the time, Starkey was still touring with The Who. While it's not confirmed if a scheduling conflict was the sole reason, he also experienced a tendon injury around that period. Regardless of the exact reason, the memory of almost collaborating with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath clearly stayed with him.
In his social media post, alongside the email, Starkey admitted this missed opportunity was one of his few regrets. He also paid a heartfelt tribute to Ozzy, calling him "one of the greatest, natural, brilliant singers of all time."
Zak concluded by sending his love to Ozzy's family during "this sad sad time" and recommended Black Sabbath's "Never Say Die" album to his followers, describing it as "so far out." :
“Ozzy will always be one of the greatest, natural, brilliant singers of
all time. I send much love and strength to his family at this sad sad
time. If u aren’t familiar with the never say die record – get into it –
it’s so far out – X.”
