On November 8, 2024, the Recording Academy nominated The Beatles’ “Now and Then” for two Grammy Awards: Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance. However, as Billboard notes, only Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr—the two surviving members of the band—are named as nominees. John Lennon and George Harrison, who passed away in 1980 and 2001 respectively, are not eligible due to Grammy rules requiring recordings to have been made within five years of their release.
Similarly, John Lennon will not be eligible for the Grammy for Best Boxed Set or Limited Edition Package for his boxed set of his 1973 album Mind Games. His son Sean Ono Lennon is nominated for the set.
With the “Now and Then” nomination, The Beatles face some stiff competition from the biggest acts of today. In the Record of the Year category, they are up against “Fortnight” by Taylor Swift feat. Post Malone; “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan; “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar; “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish; “360” by Charli XCX; “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter; and “Texas Hold ‘Em” by Beyoncé.
The nominees for Best Rock Performance, alongside The Beatles' "Now and Then," are The Black Keys for "Beautiful People (Stay High)"; Green Day for "The American Dream Is Killing Me"; Idles for "Gift Horse"; Pearl Jam for "Dark Matter"; and St. Vincent for "Broken Man."
If “Now and Then” wins Record of the Year, it will mark a historic milestone for McCartney, completing his sweep of the Grammys’ Big Four awards. He previously won Best New Artist in 1965 (with The Beatles), Song of the Year in 1967 for “Michelle” (shared with Lennon), and Album of the Year in 1968 for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
“It’s a genuine Beatles recording,” McCartney said of “Now and Then” in a statement. “In 2023, to still be working on Beatles music and about to release a new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.”
The 67th Annual Grammy Awards, set for February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
