The collection of about 250 photographs was rediscovered in the personal archive of McCartney, and they add up to a fascinating snapshot of what it was like for The Beatles as they were exploding onto the international stage. These were the early days of Beatlemania, a phenomenon associated with hordes of screaming fans,  whether they were at concerts, gathering at airports, or crowding around outside of hotels, desperate to get a first-hand look at their idols.

In his foreword to the book that accompanies the exhibition, “1964: Eyes of the Storm,” McCartney writes that the photos were taken “over an intense three-month period of travel, culminating in February 1964.” “Was a wonderful sensation because they plunged me right back. Here was my own record of our first huge trip, a photographic journal of The Beatles in six cities, beginning in Liverpool and London, followed by Paris (where John and I had been ordinary hitchhikers just over two years before), and then what we regarded as the big time, our first visit as a group to America – New York, Washington (D.C.) and Miami – to the land where, at least in our minds, music’s future was being born.”

The images in the exhibition include black and white photos taken during the first portion of that chaotic time, most made by McCartney, including portraits of the band members, scenes from backstage, downtime in dressing rooms and hotel suites, images of cities and the view from cars, photographers pointing their cameras at The Beatles, and fans waving, smiling, and eagerly waiting to welcome the Fab Four.
McCartney turns to color photographs when the band arrives in Miami, capturing images of the Liverpool lads in swimsuits, soaking up the sun as they relax by a pool, and enjoy the water.

For Beatles fans, seeing these images may stir feelings of nostalgia and affection, as McCartney’s camera captures many casual, intimate moments.
Paul said: “Only an enthusiastic photographer who happened to be in the right place at the right time.” , “From the time I was very young, when our family owned a little box camera in the 1950s. I used to love the whole process of loading a roll of Kodak film into our Brownie camera.”
