PAUL MCCARTNEY's GUITAR STRING FROM THE RUBBER SOUL SESSIONS FETCHED £2,000 AT AUCTION

A single string from the guitar Paul McCartney used to record the Beatles album Rubber Soul has sold for £2,000.

The guitar string was a prize in a competition held by the Beatles Book fan club magazine in February 1966.

It was won by fan David Cardey, who kept it for 45 years, along with two letters sent by the editor of the Beatles book, Johnny Dean.

The first letter - dated February 14, 1966 - enclosed a one guinea prize and a promise of a piece of Beatles equipment to follow.

The second letter sent three says later enclosed the guitar string and stated: 'This guitar string came from Paul's acoustic Epiphone and was given to me by him after the Beatles last recording session.
Mr Cardey died in 2011 and the rare piece of Beatles' memorabilia was left to a cousin, who has now sold it with Special Auction Services of Newbury, Berks.

Rubber Soul was the sixth studio album by the iconic band, and was released on 3 December 1965.

The recording sessions took place in London over a four-week period beginning in October of that year.

A spokesperson for Special Auction Services in Newbury said: 'This item was David's pride and joy and kept safely by him for over 45 years.

'The letters and string are in excellent condition and comes with David's original Fan Club card.'

It sold for £1,600, which totalled £2,080 with buyer's premium.
