Ana de Armas doesn't appear in the Beatles-centric romantic comedy Yesterday, but she was in the trailers. Why was her role cut from the movie?

Ana de Armas had scenes in the movie Yesterday, but her role was cut because it distracted from the main love story between Jack and Ellie.

 Screenwriter Richard Curtis described de Armas as "brilliant" in her role and explained that her character was a "complicating factor" for Jack and Ellie's relationship.

 Two fans filed a lawsuit against Universal claiming that they were misled by de Armas' appearance in the trailer, but the case was dismissed by a U.S. District Judge.

Ana de Armas doesn’t appear in the Beatles-based romantic comedy Yesterday, but she can be seen in the trailers, so why was her role cut from the movie? Himesh Patel stars as Jack, a struggling musician who wakes up one morning and finds that he’s the only person on Earth who remembers the Beatles. So, he plagiarizes their discography and becomes a huge star. The cast of Yesterday includes such A-listers as Lily James as Jack’s love interest Ellie, Kate McKinnon as his manager, and an uncredited Robert Carlyle as a 78-year-old John Lennon – but it almost had even more star power.

When Yesterday was released in 2019, de Armas was a couple of months away from being catapulted to fame by her role in Knives Out. Although she was featured in the trailers to capitalize on her up-and-coming stardom, de Armas’ scenes were cut from Yesterday. Yesterday received mixed reviews from critics. It was praised for its cast’s performances and its use of the Beatles’ iconic music, but it was criticized for playing it safe and not exploring its what-if premise further as it becomes a standard romantic comedy. But that love story at the core of Yesterday is, surprisingly, the reason why de Armas’ role was cut from the film.
