A new song from The Beatles, which broke up in 1969, has been finished thanks to help from artificial intelligence technology, according to Paul McCartney.
Paul made the announcement on BBC radio on Tuesday while promoting a new photography exhibition at the UK’s National Portrait Gallery that runs through the end of June.
“So when we came to make what will be the last Beatles record—it was a demo that John [Lennon] had that we worked on and we just finished it up and will be released this year—we were able to take John's voice and get it pure through this AI so that then we could mix the record as you would normally do,” McCartney told the BBC.
Paul didn’t name the title of the song, but the BBC speculates the composition could be 1978’s “Now And Then” by John Lennon.

Paul said that similar AI technology had been used by director Peter Jackson in order to isolate Lennon’s voice during the making of the documentary Get Back, which was released on Disney+ in 2021. In both cases, it sounds like AI is being used to enhance what’s already there rather than to make John sing things he’d never sang before.
The AI is being used to better isolate John’s vocal track and perhaps enhance it rather than make the late Beatle sing things he never sang. We’ll find out soon enough. Because, according to Paul, the record will be released this year.
“So all of that is kind of scary, but exciting because it's the future,” Paul McCartney said.
