Nearly two months after performing at Climate Pledge Arena, Paul McCartney appears on a Sodo billboard, calling on the coffee giant to end its surcharge on plant-based milks.
Dairy milk manufacturing is a large producer of greenhouse gases. In 2020, former CEO Kevin Johnson said pivoting from dairy to plant-based alternatives will play a part in the company's climate initiatives.
In the U.S., Starbucks customers can add to their beverages a splash of vegan milks, such as oat, coconut, soy or almond, for free, a company spokesperson told the Business Journal. But the coffee giant typically charges up to a dollar to substitute vegan milk for dairy in milk-based drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes.
"I must say this surprised me as I understand that in other countries there is the same charge for both types of milk and I would like to politely request that you consider this policy also in Starbucks USA,” McCartney wrote in a March letter to Johnson. “I sincerely hope that for the future of the planet and animal welfare you are able to implement this policy.”
The billboard, at 2218 First Ave. S., is near Starbucks' Seattle headquarters. It went up last weekend.
Starbucks Corp. operates about 9,000 stores nationwide.
Others have protested the surcharge, including actor James Cromwell, who glued himself to the counter of a New York City Starbucks store in May. Two others did the same at the company's Sodo headquarters.
