Micky Dolenz lent his voice to many of The Monkees‘ most famous classic rock songs. In addition, he performed many songs by The Beatles on tour. During one performance, he wanted to cry while singing a song from The Beatles’ The White Album.
Dolenz said it was impossible for him to choose a favorite Beatles album. He also said he was a massive fan of The White Album. He said he loved “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” but he couldn’t pick a favorite track from The White Album because there were too many good songs on it.

According to Westworld, Dolenz once went on tour with Christopher Cross, Todd Rundgren of Utopia, Jason Scheff of Chicago, and Joey Molland of Badfinger. They performed songs from The White Album. Dolenz performed classic Monkees tracks such as “I’m a Believer” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday” on the tour.
Dolenz said one of the songs from The White Album nearly made him cry. “But there are a couple of moments in this particular album that mean even more to me,” Dolenz said. “One of them is that I do ‘Rocky Racoon.'”

Dolenz explained why The Beatles’ comedy song “Rocky Racoon” meant so much to him. “I used to sing that to my children as a lullaby. And the other night in Washington D.C., where a couple of them live. I sang it. It was all I could do to not just burst into tears knowing they were in the audience, and I’m singing this song that I sang to them 25 years ago.”

The Beatles did not release “Rocky Racoon” as a single, so it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

Regardless, The White Album became a massive hit. The album spent 215 weeks on the Billboard 200, topping the chart for nine weeks.

The Official Charts Company reports “Rocky Racoon” did not chart in the United Kingdom either. However, The White Album did.

The White Album lasted 37 weeks on the U.K. chart, spending eight of those weeks at No. 1.

Although it wasn’t a single, numerous bands and artists covered “Rocky Racoon.”

James Blunt, Jimmy Buffett, Phish, and others put their own spin on the unusual track.

In addition, Rolling Stone reports the Marvel character Rocket Racoon was initially named Rocky Racoon after the song. Bradley Cooper played the character in Guardians of the Galaxy and other Marvel films.
