Ringo Starr, Keith Richards, Robert Plant, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Walsh,
Peter Gabriel, Brian Wilson, Sting, Iggy Pop and more than 175 other
rock legends unite to declare "We Are Not Afraid" in a video promoting the titular global campaign, aimed at raising funds for the refugee crisis and victims of religious and political violence.
Robert De Niro, Patti Smith, Jackson Browne, Susan Sarandon, Yoko
Ono, Elvis Costello, Debbie Harry, My Morning Jacket, Wilco, Nile
Rodgers, Buddy Guy, Queen's Brian May and Bonnie Raitt also appear in
the slideshow clip, holding signs bearing the slogan. The video was
directed by former 10cc member Kevin Godley and soundtracked by Nigerian
singer Majek Fashek's song "We Are Not Afraid."
"The idea for
We Are Not Afraid resulted from the increasing senseless violence
experienced by citizens of this world and a desire to try and make a
difference by bringing awareness to the issues and the organizations
dedicated to helping the victims," campaign creator Steve Weitzman
writes in the clip.
The video also incorporates an insightful
quote from author Salman Rushdie: "The enemy for the fanatic is
pleasure, which makes it extremely important to continue to indulge in
pleasure. Dance madly. That is how you get rid of terrorism."
All proceeds generated from the "We Are Not Afraid" campaign will benefit the Human Rights Watch (HRW) and International Rescue Committee
(IRC). Other participating artists include the Roots' Questlove, Pussy
Riot, George Clinton, Fiona Apple, Thurston Moore, Fred Armisen and the
Doors' Robby Krieger and John Densmore.
"Irrational hatred is a
cancer of humanity's own design," Godley wrote on the project's official
site. "To succumb would mean the failure of our species."
