STEP INSIDE FORMER CHILDHOOD HAUNT OF JOHN

Woolton Library is to go up for auction this month

Step inside a former childhood haunt of John Lennon which is due to be auctioned at the end of this month.
Woolton Library, which Lennon regularly visited during his childhood, was closed down in 2013 in a bid to cut costs and is now up for sale at a property auction.

Liverpool city council claimed that the cost of repairing the Grade II listed building - which has a guide price of £150,00- would be too high and that it didn’t have adequate disabled access.

A campaign to save the library was launched, but ultimately could not halt the closure - despite a petition receiving more than 5,000 signatures.
Now, the council has made the decision to sell the building at auction, with a guide price of £150,000.

Quiz: How much do you know about John Lennon?
Local Beatles historian and author David Bedford has revealed that John Lennon frequently visited Woolton Library in his childhood.

He said: “John was a very prevalent reader. He had a lot of books in the house, but he also often frequently visited Woolton Library, too.
"It was his local library and so when he was 9-10 he would have been in there all the time.”

The sale will be made on the condition that the building is only used for a public service such as a crèche, day nursery, education centre, museum or an art gallery.
