Pictures of The Beatles taken at their gig in Belfast's King's Hall
in November 1964 have been released for the first time by the Public
Records Office of Northern Ireland. Take a look at the
shots here.
The photos were taken by Canadian student Nick Newbery for Queen's University magazine The Gown but it seems they were rejected by the editor.
Newbery, who admitted that he didn't like The Beatles, was sitting in
the front row of at the gig, which was the band's first Irish show
since their celebrated performances in Dublin the previous year.
Iain Fleming of PRONI said: “Nick told me, ‘I wasn’t particularly
fond of the rock group but they were famous and I had a front row seat’.
“The photographs grabbed my attention because they show the Beatles
playing the King’s Hall, and I am sure there are people out there who
attended the concert and would love to see the images.
Fleming added: “I am sure taking these pictures with 16,000 screaming, fainting teenagers standing just behind him must have been quite an experience for Nick. The photographs speak for themselves and show the band as Beatlemania gripped the minds of teenagers across the globe."
