Beatlemania roared in Delaware on Friday night as Paul, whose birthday was Thursday, unfurled a dizzying, career-spanning marathon show packed with timeless hits at the Firefly Music Festival in Dover.
The band Cage the Elephant on stage certainly knew of Paul's work. During their 5:45 p.m. set, had fans pay tribute to the Beatle with a sing-along of "Happy Birthday."
The band Cage the Elephant on stage certainly knew of Paul's work. During their 5:45 p.m. set, had fans pay tribute to the Beatle with a sing-along of "Happy Birthday."
At least every one willing to be swallowed whole by the singing crowd of 90,000 – 35,000 more than the shrieking audience who saw the Beatles perform atop second base at Shea Stadium in 1965.
Macca, with his familiar Hofner bass strapped over his shoulders, opened with the Beatles classic "Birthday." The multigenerational crowd immediately started one of the night's many sing-alongs.
After the song, Paul greeted the crowd: "Good evening, Firefly. I got a feeling we're going to have a bit of a party here tonight."
Then he performed "Got to Get You Into My Life."
After taking a break to gaze at the record-breaking crowd, he said, "This is so cool. I just need to take a minute to check it all out." The crowd roared.
Paul dedicated "The Long and Winding Road" to the people of Charleston, South Carolina, where nine were killed Wednesday in a shooting at a church.
It wasn't hard to spot some of the longtime Beatles fans who bought four-day passes to catch Paul's first Delaware show – they were a little older than Firefly's target audience of Generation X and millennials.
Paul's arrival was one of the reasons why the festival stopped selling single-day passes this year, fearing an overload of demand for Paul's Delaware debut.
Paul's scheduled 21/2 hour show, which started at 10 p.m.
Next show: this weekend at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center on Sunday night
