Iconic photos of John are to be put on show in Liverpool for the first time.
Rock Seen, is a special exhibition of photographs by rock photographer Bob Gruen featuring iconic punk and rock musicians at Malmaison Liverpool.
It focuses on the rock scene in Downtown New York in the 70s. Photographs include Blondie, The Clash, David Bowie, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, the New York Dolls, Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol and many more.
The exhibition includes a special section dedicated photos of John Lennon and Yoko during their time in New York during the 1970’s, including shots of them in their apartment and iconic images such as John wearing the New York City T Shirt.
Bob met John in 1971, shortly after he moved to New York City and they soon became friends and neighbours.
Bob became his personal photographer when John needed pictures of his family, for an article or for an album cover. The photos in this show are a testament to his friendship with John.
The exhibition is accompanied by Bob Gruen’s book John Lennon – The New York Years, that along with the photos will be on sale at the show.
Bob Gruen said: “Pictures of John were always popular – maybe because he shared so much of himself through them. He was open and expressive, and whatever he was feeling at that moment when the picture was taken, you saw it. Looking back on it now, the pictures seem to chart his evolution over the years.”

Stephen said: “It’s great to have the opportunity to bring Bob’s iconic John Lennon photographs to Liverpool for the first time. There is a great mix of well known images and some that will be new to people who visit the show.”
Gary Davis, Executive Chairman of Malmaison said: “It’s without question that John Lennon iconic status resonates globally and Bob’s photographic works are a backdrop for a generation that reflects many of our guests. It’s fantastic to be host for this unique exhibition.”
