On November 10, 1963, when the Beatles performed at the Hippodrome in
Birmingham, thousands of frenzied fans and police squadrons flooded the
city.
The crowd was so thick, the band needed to make it through them somehow – so they donned police uniforms and snuck their way through.
The band eventually snapped a now-iconic photo, grinning with their police helmets on, as gleeful officers admired them.
The Beatles arrived almost unnoticed at the Hippodrome, Birmingham, Nov. 10, 1963, dressed as policemen. Others in picture are real policemen.
On this night, the West Midlands Police had brought the Beatles to the
Hippodrome Theater in a police van. It was the height of Beatlemania and
security risks were pretty high due to the fans taking just about any
risk to get close to the guys.
Just as the Beatles arrived safely at the
stage door, a number of photos were taken of the Beatles wearing the
West Midlands Police helmets.
