John's 'Beatle Island', real name Dorinish Island, is still up
for sale. With panoramic views of Clew Bay, it's no wonder John fell
in love with it.
Dorinish Island, which has a price tag of €300,000 is set in a
stunning location directly below Croagh Patrick with views out across
Clare Island to the Atlantic and back into Westport.
There has been huge interest in the island since it went on sale in
2012 and while local estate agent Andrew Crowley from Sherry Fitgerald
in Westport is remaining tight lipped, we reckon there have been some
celebrities eyeing it up as an idyllic holiday spot.
Andrew reckons the island will suit someone with a vision, a reasonable budget and a very influential/creative architect.
Speaking to RTÉ Ten Andrew also explained
a little bit of the history of the island: "John Lennon saw a newspaper
ad for an island for sale off Ireland, this was Dorinish Island which
was being sold by Westport Harbour Board. The island was used by the
Board in the 1800s to house marine pilots who guided sailing ships in to
Westport harbour.
"John bought the island in 1967 for £1,700 at an auction where local
solicitor Michael Brown bid on his behalf against local farmers. He
first visited the island in 1967 after the purchase. He then arranged
for a wooden “gypsy caravan” painted in psychedelic colours which had
been bought for his son Julian’s birthday to be brought from London and
floated out to the island on a purpose built raft as a temporary home.
"He was granted planning permission by Mayo county council to build a
house, however, after the collapse of his first marriage to Cynthia, he
postponed the plans to build and permission lapsed in 1972.
"John only visited the island once more, this time with Yoko Ono."
