Opportunity knocks for Beatles fans at auction
Fab Four door goes under the hammer at Beatles memorabilia auction in Liverpool
Beatles fans could soon be knocking on the door of Paul McCartney’s childhood home when it goes under the hammer.
The unusual piece of memorabilia, taken from 20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool, is expected to fetch about £8,500 at auction.
Unpublished
photographs of The Beatles at the famous Cavern Club, a ticket for
the staff dance at Lewis’s in Liverpool and a handbill for Heswall
Jazz Club are also for sale.
Also on offer is a handwritten letter from John Lennon, a
thank you card from George Harrison and an original section of stage
from the Cavern Club.
They join two books signed by John Lennon while at Quarry Bank School, which could each bring in about £2,750.
Early
inquiries about this year’s auction, which will be held at the
Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts (LIPA), have come from
America, Japan, Australia, South Africa and across Europe.
Despite
it being the 22nd annual Beatles memorabilia auction, organiser
Stephen Bailey was surprised by the number of very rare items for
sale.
Stephen, who is the manager of The Beatles Shop in Mathew
Street, said: “I just cannot believe it. Every year we think that
the quality and number of rare items offered for auction must
decrease and we are always proved wrong.
“It is amazing – people just keep coming into the shop month after month with the most unusual rare items.
“This year we had someone walk in with two previously unseen photos of the Beatles from the Cavern Club.
“There is a very rare ticket for the staff dance at Lewis’s
at the 527 Club on November 28, 1962, which has an estimate of £2,250
to £2,500. A contract for The Beatles to play that show went for
$18,750 in America.”
The most expensive lot is expected to be the front door from the former McCartney home.
It comes with a letter from Sheila Jones who lived in the
house after the McCartneys moved out and had the door replaced in the
late 1970s.
The auction at 10.30am on August 24 is timed to coincide with The Beatles Worldwide Convention in Liverpool.
