Abe Laboriel Jr. Debuts with Pearl Jam at the Ohana Festival and Clears Up Questions Regarding the Band's Percussion
The question that has kept the international rock scene in suspense since Matt Cameron's surprising departure in July 2025 has begun to be answered.
During their anticipated return to the stage at the Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California, Pearl Jam revealed who is occupying their drum kit: renowned musician Abe Laboriel Jr.
The premiere of Laboriel with the legendary Seattle band took place last Friday during a surprise set previously announced under the enigmatic title Eddie Vedder and Friends.
Although the drummer's presence caused immediate commotion among attendees and fans, Laboriel's official permanent membership in the group has not yet been fully confirmed. During the concert, frontman Eddie Vedder clarified to the crowd that the musician was filling in for the night. Expectations are now focused on Pearl Jam's upcoming performance scheduled for Sunday at the same festival, which constitutes their only announced show for this year.
Abe Laboriel Jr. is no stranger to Eddie Vedder's inner circle.
Both previously collaborated on the vocalist's 2022 solo album Earthling.
With an undeniable musical lineage as the son of legendary session bassist Abe Laboriel, the drummer boasts a solid reputation in the industry thanks to his prominent collaborations and tours alongside figures such as Paul McCartney, Sting, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood.
Matt Cameron's departure after 27 years marked the end of an extremely stable era for Pearl Jam's percussion. The temporary or definitive incorporation of a musician of Abe Laboriel Jr.'s caliber and versatility demonstrates the band's commitment to maintaining a standard of interpretive excellence in this new phase of their career.
This Sunday's performance at the Ohana Festival will be key to determining whether this collaboration marks the beginning of a long-term alliance or a transitional chapter in the group's history.
