Looking at the letter, which is dated September 29, 1971, John Lennon wrote to Eric Clapton about his drive to bring back true rock and roll. Given Clapton’s mastery of the guitar, the musician seemed like a perfect fit.
The eight-page document, dated September 29, 1971, reveals Lennon's deep admiration for Clapton and offers a glimpse into his ambitious vision for a band that could redefine live performances.
Lennon promised in the letter there would be no contracts. Only wanting to focus on the music, he wrote, “I know I can bring out something great in you … I hope to bring out the same kind of greatness in all of us. No one will be asked to do anything they don’t want to … no contracts.
While asking Clapton to join him on the road, Lennon also showed interest in going international with concerts in China, New Zealand, Australia, Russia, and even Tonga. As for the band, Lennon wanted it to consist of Klaus Voormann on bass, Nicky Hopkins on piano, Clapton on guitar, Jim Keltner on drums, and himself taking over vocals.
The auction, conducted by International Autograph Auctions Europe SL, will take place online on December 5, with an estimated value of up to €150,000 (around Rs 1.33 crore). The auction house describes the letter as "one of the rarest forms of Lennon's personal communications available."
In his message to Clapton, John Lennon speaks candidly about the musician's talent and potential for greatness. "You must know by now that Yoko and I rate your music and yourself very highly," he wrote.
The auction house said, "The rarity of such personal expression over multiple pages in handwritten form by John Lennon to Eric Clapton highlights Lennon's enduring passion for his music but also what could have been a monumental moment in rock history. It also reminds us of a remarkable association between two of the world's most legendary icons in music.
