PAUL MCCARTNEY HAS REACTED TO THE UK GOVERNMENT

Paul McCartney has reacted to the UK government taking away £16 million in funding away from his Liverpool’s Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) in a new statement.

“I helped to bring LIPA into life during very difficult times for Liverpool. It is now a highly respected institution all over the world.
Our funding was recently affected by what to me, and the heads of every university in Liverpool, was a flawed process.
LIPA is my passion and part of my legacy. It would not be fair to allow injustice to affect its future. I sincerely hope the Government will correct this error and help us to continue our work successfully into the future.”

An Office for Students spokesperson admitted the process but didn’t want to comment any further, saying:
“The OfS is cooperating with the Ombudsman’s ongoing investigation into decisions made by HEFCE which pre-date the creation of the OfS.
This is a live investigation and it would not be appropriate to comment any further.”

JULIA BAIRD TOLD THAT HER FAMILY WANTED TO SEE JOHN MOVE ON WITH ANOTHER JOB

Paul McCartney and John Lennon almost quit music before The Beatles made it big, as they considered going into another line of work. Lennon’s sister Julia Baird told DailyMailTV that her family wanted to see Lennon move on with another job.

“John and Paul were lucky, because if it had gone on much longer without getting a break I don’t know what would have happened.

Mimi (John’s aunt) famously said to John: ‘The guitar is all very well John but you will never make a living out of it.’

That was the worry for all the families. I was worried about him dropping out of art college. Something inside us insisted that they had to stick with it. They wanted to make it and they were absolutely determined.”

Baird said she was happy that ultimately McCartney and Lennon didn’t listen, and continued their career and became icons with George Harrison and Ringo Starr in The Beatles.

“The Fab Four would have never gone on to make rock history if they had listened to their families’ concerns that they would end up broke and hopeless.”

CRAIG CAR STEREOS SPONSORED A CONTEST "WIN RINGO´S CAR" IN 1978

Craig car stereos sponsored a contest ‘Win Ringo’s Car Sweepstakes.’ The ads featured Ringo with the car and ran in Hot Rod, Motor Trend and many teen magazines.

Ringo liked the car so much he wanted one for himself too. When it was all done, Hemmings Motors built him a convertible ’57: the Craig ’57 [hardtop sport coupe] like a street machine, with a shaved hood, tube grille, lake pipes, Western wheels, and a multi-color flame job over black enamel. It was powered by a Corvette 350 engine and a four-speed.

"NOWHERE BOY" WILL BE ADAPTED INTO A STAGE PRODUCTION

The 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy is being made into a new stage project from Tony-winning producers Robyn Goodman and Josh Fiedler (Avenue Q). Brian and Dayna Lee are fellow producers on the project, which is currently in the early stages of development.

The project is expected to be a play with music, featuring Lennon's rock-and-roll hits of the 1950s, but none of the Beatles songs for which he later became known.

The life and legacy of John Lennon has previously played out on Broadway in the original musical Lennon (2005), as well as in the Beatles tribute shows Beatlemania (1977) and Rain (2010). Lennon was also a contributor to the long-running musical Oh! Calcutta! (1969).

The film Nowhere Boy, which centers on the two women who largely impacted Lennon's life, starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Lennon along with Kristin Scott Thomas as his aunt Mimi Smith and Anne-Marie Duff as his mother, Julia.
Casting, creative team and the announcement of a debut production of the stage production are forthcoming.

A RARE FIRST PRESSING OF THE BEATLES’ FIRST ALBUM IS EXPECTED TO SELL FOR ABOUT £500

Market Harborough auctioneer Mark Gilding was visiting a community centre in Desborough to look at items left in a storage barn for a more than a decade. There he found a box of vinyl records containing a stereo version of the Fab Four's 1963 debut album Please Please Me.

"The vast majority of these records are later mono pressings, but there were a small number of stereo versions pressed in 1963, “ said Mr Gilding."These stereo versions are rare as they were not readily available in records shops at the time due to being a special order. The album I uncovered in the barn was a stereo version, and although not a specialist, I knew this was worth researching to confirm the value. In 2015 we had sold a stereo pressing for £2,000 of the same album."

Gildings Auctioneers' toy and memorabilia expert Andrew Smith confirmed the record was one of the earliest copies produced.
Clues to the record’s provenance include incorrect credits on the paper labels, the tool reference numbers impressed around the centre hole and the tax code stamped around the centre hole.
"Sadly the record isn’t in the best condition but it is being offered in our next specialist toy, memorabilia and model railway auction on Monday, June 24 with an estimate of £400 to 600 - not bad for something that has been lying around in a barn for over a decade,” said Mr Gilding."We expect it to attract significant interest from collectors and Beatles enthusiasts."

Proceeds of the album's sale will go to the Vine Community Trust which operates Marlow House community day centre where the record was found.
Other lots of interest to Beatles fans include a back catalogue of other vinyl releases and an original advertising poster for the Revolver album.
Consignments for the June auction are accepted until Wednesday, June 5.

ON THIS DAY IN 1998 : LINDA MCCARTNEY PASSED AWAY

April 17: On this day in 1998, Linda McCartney passed away.

Linda McCartney was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 1995, and her condition soon grew worse when the cancer metastasized to her liver.[49] She died at the age of 56 on April 17, 1998, at the McCartney family ranch in Tucson, Arizona. Her family was with her when she died.

She was cremated in Tucson, and her ashes were scattered at the McCartney farm in Sussex, England.

Her husband later suggested that fans remember her by donating to breast cancer research charities that do not support animal testing, "or the best tribute – go veggie."

A memorial service was held for her at St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, which was attended by George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Billy Joel, Elton John, David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel, and other celebrities among a congregation of 700.

A memorial service was also held at Riverside Church in Manhattan, two months after her death. "She was my girlfriend," McCartney said at her funeral. "I lost my girlfriend."

She left all her property to Paul, including royalties from books or records, and all rights to her photos. He has pledged to continue her line of vegetarian food, and to keep it free from genetically modified organisms.

A few months after her death, the Edinburgh International Film Festival premiered Wide Prairie, a six-minute cartoon fantasy film she made with director Oscar Grillo.

In April 1999, Paul McCartney performed at the "Concert for Linda" tribute at the Royal Albert Hall, which had been organized by two of their friends, Chrissie Hynde and Carla Lane.

Among the artists that performed, besides Paul, were George Michael, the Pretenders, Elvis Costello, and Tom Jones. Paul closed the concert by dedicating the event to Linda, whom he called his "beautiful baby," and their children.

In January 2000, Paul announced donations in excess of $2,000,000 for cancer research at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson, where Linda received treatment.

The donations, through the Garland Appeal, were made on the condition that no animals would be used for testing purposes.

Also in 2000, The Linda McCartney Centre, a cancer clinic, opened at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital. In November 2002, the Linda McCartney Kintyre Memorial Trust opened a memorial garden in Campbeltown, the main town in Kintyre, with a bronze statue of her made by her cousin, sculptor Jane Robbins.

ON THIS DAY: “TRY SOME BUY SOME” WAS ISSUED AS A SINGLE IN THE UK

On this day in 1971, “Try Some Buy Some” was issued as a single in the UK.

"Try Some, Buy Some" is a song written by George Harrison, first released in 1971 as a single by Ronnie Spector. The latter recorded this and other Harrison compositions, such as "You" and "When Every Song Is Sung", in London for a planned comeback album on the Beatles' Apple Records.

The project was co-produced by her husband at the time, Phil Spector, whose temporary withdrawal from music-making in 1966 had forced Ronnie to reluctantly abandon her own career. After the single became only a minor hit, and following recording sessions that had been hampered by the producer's erratic behaviour, the proposed album was cancelled.

In 1973, George added his own vocal onto a new mix of the instrumental track and included the result on his album Living in the Material World.
George wrote "Try Some, Buy Some" during sessions for All Things Must Pass, his successful 1970 triple album, also co-produced by Spector. The song's austere melody was influenced by Harrison composing on a keyboard instrument rather than guitar.

The lyrics reflect his perception of God amid temptations associated with the material world and take the form of a recollection of his first spiritual awakening. Ronnie Spector later admitted to being unable to understand the concept and disliking the song, and commentators have duly noted its unsuitability as a vehicle for her comeback. "Try Some, Buy Some" is notable for the extent to which Phil Spector employed his Wall of Sound production, as well as for being a significant commercial failure for Spector, in the manner of his ambitious 1966 production "River Deep – Mountain High", by Ike & Tina Turner. The recording features a choir and long, lavishly orchestrated instrumental passages, the musical arrangement for which was supplied by John Barham. Besides Harrison, the backing musicians include Leon Russell, Pete Ham, Klaus Voormann and Jim Gordon. The single's B-side was "Tandoori Chicken", an upbeat song in the rockabilly style.

HELP! (1965) DELETED SCENE

The Beatles filmed many scenes that was deleted from the film, Help! in 1965, certain scenes that are missing from the completed film.

The scene opens with the Beatles arriving at the "Sam Ahab School of Trancendental Elocution." They are greeted by Sam Ahab, who is played by actor Frankie Howerd. Notice that the Beatles are all wearing the same clothes from the "Hey Be-a-tle!" scene.

Sam Ahab is an acting teacher (he prefers the term "trancending") who is giving the Beatles acting lessons. It's impossible to know exactly what his character was supposed to be like, but he is obviously a comical character and seems to be very impatient with the Beatles. Ringo, upset that none of the Beatles believed his tale about the encounter with the fishing rod, tries to tell Sam about it, but Sam keeps interrupting him with talk of "persevering in our transcendence." As Sam instructs the Beatles to "limber and lope," John asks, "Which do you want first, Sam - the limber?"

Sam and the others notice the hatchet embedded in the mirror. Sam is startled, and Lady Macbeth is frightened. According to the novelization, the scene ends with John yanking the hatchet from the mirror, handing it to Lady Macbeth, and saying, "Is this a chopper that you see before you?"

UNIQUE BEATLES MEMORABILIA IN AUSTRALIA

The exhibition opens on April 27, 55 years after the iconic band's only tour down under.

Unique Beatles memorabilia, including John Lennon's famous reading glasses, will be on display in Melbourne for 4 months.
The exhibition will be held at Melbourne Museum, which is less than 3 kilometres away from Festival Hall - the venue for the Beatles' Victorian shows in 1964.

As well as getting a chance to glimpse the master songwriter's glasses, museum goers will see John Lennon's famous Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band suit and handwritten lyrics.

Exhibition co-curator Victoria Broackes said the display wasn't "conceived as a trip down memory lane.Looking back 50 years since the events framed in the exhibition took place reveals the importance of that revolutionary period to our lives today, Amidst political turmoil, many of the freedoms so hard won in the 60s are being challenged anew across the Western world (and beyond), so it is timely to look back at this period."she said.

UNKNOWN FOOTAGE OF JOHN LENNON & YOKO ONO

Fifty years after John Lennon and Yoko Ono famously staged a "bed-in" for peace in an Amsterdam hotel, a Dutchman has unearthed 30 minutes of colour footage of the event from his cellar.
The couple spent a week mostly at the Hilton hotel to spread a pacifist message while receiving journalists for interviews.

The European leg of their honeymoon, which included an unusual press conference in Vienna with the glamour pair obscured inside a giant "bag", was a huge media event-each step captured by photographers and videographers.
This included a Dutch team shooting footage for a two-part, 84-minute documentary, a kind of video diary filmed at the pair's request.
It was broadcast only once, shortly after the honeymoon, and shown at the Edinburgh Film Festival the same year before disappearing into the archives of broadcaster KRO, where Jan Hovers was employed in the 1980s.

As Amsterdam marks the 50th anniversary of the unusual honeymoon, a former colleague remembered that Hovers had once mentioned the find to him.
The colleague "knocked on the door and said: 'Didn't you have a film of John and Yoko from the time?' Only then did I fetch it from the cellar," Hovers said.
- 'Very special' -

Lennon and Beatles biographer Mark Lewinsohn told Nieuwsuur he had no idea the footage existed until now and described it as "very special"."It's a great addition to the archive... It's another half-an-hour of film of John Lennon and Yoko Ono that will tell us things that will make us more informed and better appreciate what they did."
The footage, parts of it broadcast by Nieuwsuur, shows the couple in long, white pyjamas in their bed on different days, with two large posters reading "Hair Peace" and "Bed Peace" sellotaped to the hotel window behind them.
