THE BEATLES TO RELEASE NEW LIVE ALBUM OF HISTORIC HOLLYWOOD BOWL SHOWS

New release updates long-deleted live album from 1977

The Beatles are to release an updated version of their only fully official live in concert album.
Originally released in 1977, ‘Live At The Hollywood Bowl’ documents their three shows at the 17,000-capacity arena in 1964 and 1965.

The new release is sourced directly from the original three-track mixing desk recordings from the shows. Its 17 songs have been mastered by engineer Sam Okell and Giles Martin, son of The Beatles’ late producer George Martin.

The album includes a 24-page booklet with an essay by journalist David Fricke. It’s out on September 9, but the vinyl version is out later, on November 18. The cover photo, taken by tour manager Bob Bonis, shows The Beatles boarding a flight from Seattle to Vancouver in August 1964 for their first gig in Canada.

Discussing his attempts to capture the shows as a live album for its initial release in 1977, George Martin wrote at the time: “The chaos, I might almost say panic, that reigned at these concerts was unbelievable unless you were there. Only three-track recording was possible; The Beatles had no ‘fold back’ speakers, so they could not hear what they were singing, and the eternal shriek from 17,000 healthy, young lungs made even a jet plane inaudible.”

The Beatles’ only other live albums available in the UK are the two volume ‘Live At The BBC’ releases from 1994 and 2013.

The album is a companion to director Ron Howard’s documentary about The Beatles’ live shows, Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years, which is released on September 15.
