John Lennon was paid in chocolate biscuits: 10 things we learnt from Whispering Bob's memoirs

Whispering Bob Harris's new memoir is full of funny tales about the Beatles, The Stones, old jazz stars in medieval orgies and Manchester United 

Robert Plant said of BBC Radio 2 music presenter Whispering Bob Harris that he "champions the unknown, the obscure and the legendary with equal zest and detail".

The budget for the first Old Grey Whistle Test series was £500 a show – and that included rights, appearance money and set designs. The presenters were paid £40 a show. When Bob Harris told John Lennon that, in line with BBC regulations, the former Beatles star had to receive a £15 payment in order to appear, Lennon said: "Bring me £15-worth of chocolate olivers, I can't get them in America."
