Before it was announced publicly that Ringo would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Award for Musical Excellence recipient, the former Beatle's onetime bandmate, Paul, phoned the drummer to give him the good news. McCartney joined The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday to talk about Starr being enshrined in the Rock Hall.
"I was talking to a friend and he said 'Brian Epstein is getting
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.' I said 'That's great,
because he's the Beatles manager,'" Paul told Fallon. "He says,
'Yeah, but Ringo's not in yet.' I said, 'Whoa. Wait a minute. We can't
have that…' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you got to put Ringo in. He's
very famous."
Paul also revealed that his favorite Starr solo cuts are "Back
Off Boogaloo" and "It Don't Come Easy." Fallon then shared his spot-on
Beatles impressions.
"[Paul] said, 'Would you accept the award?'" Ringo said of the
Fab Four bassist's phone call. "I said, 'Sure, man.' He said he'd been
talking to Dave Grohl and other people and they were stunned that I
wasn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and he needed something to do
that night and he's going to give me the award."
"I didn't know that George and John were in it," Ringo added. "I'm
not keeping up with it all the time. We'll have a very nice evening and
it'll be my pleasure to receive the award… And it means, finally, the
four of us are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame even though we were the
biggest pop group in the land."
