Twelve thousand screaming teen-agers packed Piccadilly Circus tonight
[July 6] for a look at the Beatles as they attended the world première
of their first film, ‘‘A Hard Day’s Night.’’ Also present for the
charity première were Princess Margaret and her husband, Lord Snowdon,
but they received a much smaller ovation from the crowd.
The Beatles —
Paul, George, John and Ringo — were
presented to the royal couple in the lobby of the theater. ‘‘What do you
think of the film?’’ asked the princess. ‘‘I don’t think we are very
good, ma’am,’’ Mr. McCartney said with a smile. ‘‘But the director is
very good.’’ As soon as the royal party left, usherettes in dresses
printed with the Beatles’ faces rushed up to the quartet and asked them
to sign their dresses. Ambulance men carried off about 20 fainting girls
including one who screamed from her stretcher: ‘‘Let me up! I want to
see them!’’ — New York Herald Tribune, European Edition, July 7, 1964.
