This weekend Triangle residents get another chance to hear a long-lost
Beatles story that emerged at last year's Full Frame Documentary Film
Festival — and it's free.
"Good Ol' Freda" is the story of Freda Kelly, who hung out at
the Cavern in Liverpool as a teenager. She met a young band called The
Beatles there and was eventually hired as their secretary and tasked
with running their fan club.
Kelly remained with the Beatles
until they broke up, then found another job and moved on with her life.
She never wrote about her experience and rarely spoke of it. But in 2012
Kelly agreed to tell her story to documentary filmmaker Ryan White. The
resulting film offers a unique perspective on what it was like to live
and work with John, Paul, George and Ringo during the 1960s.
A
big hit at last year's Full Frame festival, "Good Ol' Freda" returns
this year as one of three free movie offerings. The festival kicks off
Thursday, April 3 at several downtown Durham venues including the
Carolina Theater. On Friday "Good Ol' Freda" is being shown in Durham
Central Park at 8:30 p.m. Several food trucks will be on hand for the
festivities.
Another movie that's returning for a free showing
is "If You Build It," which follows two designers who bring a unique and
innovative education program to Bertie County, NC. "If You Build It"
will play in Durham's Central Park Saturday at 8:30 p.m. (again with
food trucks standing by).
The third free movie is Sunday night's
closing film, "The Battered Bastards of Baseball." It's the story of the
Portland Mavericks, who joined the minor leagues in 1973 as the only
team without a major-league affiliation. The team was the brainchild of
Bing Russell and the roster included his son, actor Kurt Russell. The
film will be shown Sunday at 8 p.m. in the Carolina Theater's Fletcher
Hall.
If you've never been to the Full Frame Documentary Film
Festival, this is a great chance to try it for free — while enjoying
some of the first warm weekend evenings of spring.
