Mexican rock 'n' roll singer Johnny Laboriel has died after
battling prostate cancer, reports Televisa. He was 71 years old. Johnny
Laboriel, born July 9, 1942 in Mexico City, was the son of actor and
composer Juan José Laboriel and actress Francisca López de Laboriel. He
shot to fame at the young age of 19 when he joined rock 'n' roll band
"Los Rebeldes del Rock" in 1958. He went solo in the late 1960s, when he
reached the peak of his fame and career. But it's not just his musical
career that he is famous for, as Johnny Laboriel engaged in many
entertainment-related positions.
Throughout his career, Johnny Laboriel, who was born José Juan Laboriel López,
dabbled in acting as well, having featuered in a wide array of films
including "The Last Mexican," The Birthright," "Furia Roja," "The
Rhythm of Twist," "Dengue Love," "Revenge of Gabino Barrera and The
Children of Don Laureano," and more. His career in telenovelas was also
important, and fans of the children soap 'Carrusel' might remember him
as José Rivera, dad to Cirilo, the afromexican kid in love with the
rich girl (Ludwika Paleta). He also played a part in
'Nunca te olvidaré' along Edith González and Fernando Colunga. One can
also argue that Johnny Laboriel will be remembered most for his dance
moves, which he shared with the world in TV show "Premier Orfeon" and in
movies like "A Ritmo De Twist" and "La Mano Que Aprieta." Earlier this
year, Johnny Laboriel celebrated his career of 55 years with appearances
at the National Auditorium Lunario.
The news of his death was confirmed by priest José de Jesús Aguilar, the deputy director of Radio and Television of the Archdiocese of Mexico, who tweeted that
the singer had died at one. "Johnny Laboriel started a new tour. Thanks
for your friendship and many successes," read the tweet by José de
Jesús Aguilar. According to the priest, the singer was hospitalized from
prostate cancer and was in a delicate state. "Keep praying for Johnny
Laboriel," tweeted the priest yesterday. "Yesterday I put the Holy Oils
and the situation is very delicate." Local media outlets have been
reporting that Johnny Laboriel has been hospitalized at the National
Cancer Institute since August 10 and was discharged to spend his last
days with his family.
