YOKO ONO: EDM IS NOT A YOUNG PERSON´S GAME

EDM (or electronic dance music) infiltrated the mainstream full-force last year, with The Grammys highlighting the genre and MTV VMAs launching an EDM category. Given its status as the PYT du jour of the music scene, one might presume that its denizens are all — how to put this delicately — hella young (genre figurehead Skrillex is just 25). Well, Yoko Ono — who just turned 80 — is out to prove that that isn’t the case. The artist, who has been experimenting with music for decades now, recently collaborated with EDM producer Dave Audé on the first dance track she has ever co-written, “Hold Me” — a number-one single no less.
The O Music Blog recently spoke with Ono via email about her foray into EDM, the various remixes done of her work over the years, and her contributions to the mobile app world. Check out our Q&A below:
What advice would you give aspiring musicians who think that youth is somehow synonymous with the music world/EDM genre?
It’s a very silly idea. So many composers in history have made their best music after they were at least more than 40 years old.
When they think they can make it only when they are young, [it's] making it because they look young and cute. It doesn’t mean that the music they make is fantastic. John Lennon made the ultimate music, which is played everywhere in the world, IMAGINE, after he was almost reaching 40 [ed note: He was 31]. Try to make your biggest song now — when you are no more than a teenager!
What did you learn about music while trying your hand at writing “Hold Me”?
Still the best is to put down your true emotion in the song. ‘Hold Me’ is how I was feelilng then… and maybe now, too!
