Two days separate a pair of sad October anniversaries for Yoko Ono. On
Sunday, the war in Afghanistan will hit an unthinkable 11-year-mark. And
Tuesday would have been John Lennon’s 72nd birthday.
Both
milestones fuel her unflagging activism and desire for harmony in the
world. Ono and John’s first single was “Give Peace a Chance.” They
turned their honeymoon in 1969 into a “Bed-In” protest against the
Vietnam War.
“It’s terrible. I wish there would be peace,” Ono
said of a recent American G.I. casualty that brought the U.S. death toll
to 2000.
