The annual John Lennon ‘Dream Power’ concert, a charity event held to
raise funds to help children in developing countries around the world,
will be held again this year on Saturday December 8, the anniversary of
John Lennon’s death. A galaxy of top artists will pay tribute to John
Lennon’s music at the Budokan Arena in Tokyo.
This concert has been held every year in Tokyo since its inauguration
by Yoko Ono in 2001, and a total of 117 schools have now been built
with the proceeds in a total of 28 countries throughout Asia, Africa and
Latin America.
The profits from this year’s concert will fund around another 10 schools for disadvantaged children around the world.
A broad range of top-class Japanese musicians have responded to Yoko
Ono’s invitation to appear at this year’s concert. A total of 21 artists
in a line-up featuring 14 acts, including several appearing in the
concert for the first time, will join Yoko Ono, who is coming all the
way from New York for the event.
The concert will also feature a number of artists who have made
regular appearances over the years ~ Tamio Okuda, Kazuya Yoshii,
Kazuyoshi Saito, and LOVE PSYCHEDELICO. Yoshii and Saito have taken time
out of their own busy concert schedules to make a special appearance
here for us. Of special note is the long-awaited re-appearance of Junka,
returning to the stage after taking a four-year break as a new mother.
There are a total of six new acts this year.
The multi-talented actress, singer and pianist Nao Matsushita will be
appearing both as a singer and a pianist. Then there is the
fantastically popular flumpool, fresh from his success on TV, Ryouta
Fujimaki, now concentrating on a solo career after the break-up of his
group, and Kyosaku from MONGOL800 who is joining THE HUMAN BEATS along
with creative directors Michihiko Yanai and Seiji Kameda.
Then we have Unicorn and JUN SKY WALKER(S), who topped the
unprecedented band boom that characterized the latter part of the 80’s
through the 90’s. Their vocalist Kazuya Miyata is making his first
appearance here, in a dream collaboration with Tamio Okuda over a John
Lennon song. MC John Kabira is also making his first appearance for us.
And finally Ann, who appeared last year in a reading of the lyrics of
Imagine, will be performing this year as a singer.
