LONDON — Bruce Springsteen played over the speakers while Sir Paul
McCartney watched from the bleachers. Throw in some sand, a few bikinis
and a lot of dancing and what you have is Rio de Janeiro on Downing St.
Beach volleyball is the all-day, all-night party disguised as an
Olympic event and one of the toughest tickets at the London Games,
unless you are a Beatle, of course. There were sellout crowds on Day 1
of the men’s and women’s competition, which is being played inside a
makeshift stadium on Horse Guards Parade, a few feet from the official
residence of British Prime Minister David Cameron.
