The high-powered collaboration of music, dance and fashion sees the designer join forces with her father Paul McCartney, 69, for the new ballet production that is part of New York City Ballet's Fall Gala.

With final adjustments being made to outfits, headdresses and looks, the London-based designer, who celebrated her 40th birthday last weekend, said she was working until the eleventh hour on the dance clothes.

'We’re cutting it fine with the deadline. But for me that’s normal. It’s the nature of my industry,' she told WWD.

The fashion newspaper says that her work with sports label Adidas has set her in good stead to approach the technical world of dance costume design.

'For me, technically the pieces have to work... It’s not only a matter of working with design,' she said.

'The dancers have to be able to leap, twirl and stick a few people in the air.'

The show is certain to look as fantastical as possible, adding to the much-anticipated music that is Sir Paul's first orchestral score for dance.

In a sneak preview of tomorrow's show, dancers are seen wearing black and white tribal-patterned body suits. Thick, dark geometric lines and swooping curves are reminiscent of Maori graphics, while black leather straps and shining silver studs complete headdresses.

A sketch of one outfit by the designer shows a feathered, almost flame-like decorated free-form body suit.

It is not her first collaboration with performance art - she has designed costumes for Madonna's Re-Invention Tour and for an Annie Lennox tour as well as for movies and artists, including Jeff Koons.

But working with her former Beatle father has clearly been a memorable experience. 'It’s interesting. That’s a funny one for me,' she told WWD.

'On one side, I am a daughter working with her father, which is an incredibly remarkable experience in life no matter who your father is. It’s also quite an emotional thing.

'On another side, I know and understand I am working with Paul McCartney.'

He, on the other hand, is working with one of the world's most successful fashion designers, her popular creations often adorning Hollywood's biggest and most beautiful stars.
