Bristol University composer's memories of working with Beatle Paul McCartney


HAND-CRAFTED NOTES

There aren't many composers who can boast of working with Sir Paul McCartney. With the exception of John Lennon and Linda McCartney, the inner-workings of Macca's songwriting have always been a remote mystery to most.

But Jean Hasse has fond memories of working with the former Beatle during his Standing Stone period.

"It was when he was working on his chamber music back in the 1990s," says Jean – the American-born composer and musician, who has been a music lecturer at Bristol University since 2006.

"Paul McCartney wanted hand-copied music for his Standing Stone pieces, so each musician in the orchestra had their own notation. Although computers had already started taking over the job of the music copier at that time, Paul thought there was something nice about having it hand copied.
