POET Laureate Carol Ann Duffy will judge the Liverpool Lennon Poetry Competition which comes to a climax this weekend.
The competition is part of the city’s John Lennon tribute season.The Beatles Story, in conjunction with Event Poets, has been searching for the Liverpool Lennon Poet 2010. Carol Ann Duffy and a team of judges have been judging the poems from hundreds of entries.
Now 12 have been selected to take part in a Poetry Slam final on Saturday at LIPA in Mount Street.
The final itself will fall into two categories – Performance Poet and Paper Poet.The competition carries a £1,000 prize for the winner of the Performance Poet.Meanwhile the “Paper Poet” competition has attracted entries from all over the world.
Beatles Story managing director Jerry Goldman said: “The Liverpool Lennon Poetry Competition is about finding new talent, and about having Lennon as an inspiration to create new poetry that is inspired by his legacy.”
The Lennon tribute season opened on October 9, what would have been the former Beatle’s 70th birthday, and runs until December 9 and the 30th anniversary of his murder.It includes the unveiling of a peace monument in his memory, walks, talks, music, and a major Lennon tribute concert at the ECHO arena on December 9.
