When that expires, they enter the public domain and can be re-copyrighted by the composer. That was my understanding of the law. When the copyrights are renewed, they are under the newest copyright law, which protects the rights for the life of the artist, plus 50 years. That's what I read about the law when the latest copyright convention went into effect. Unless something changed, that should be what occurs.
